Urine 24 Hours
- How to collect 24
hour urine:
Make sure you get a proper container when you
start collecting urine:
- Get rid of the first urine (first morning
urine) and note the time (example: 7:00am)
- Collect all urine samples of the day and
night till the next day at the same time of the first urine in the container
- Do not try to drink water and fluids in a
way that exceeds daily consumption
Note: Please be very strict to collect all
samples within 24 hours
Place the gallon in the fridge all the time
during the collection
Wash with drinking water and dry every time

- Conditions for 24 Hour Urine
Collection relevant to these tests:
Catecholamines
Patient
should abstain from the following at least 2 days prior to and during urine
specimen collection: chocolates, coffee, bananas, vanilla, citrus fruits and
when medically possible, drug such as aspirin, methyldopa, isoproterenol,
labetalol, mandelamine and metoclopromide.
5-hydroxy
Indole Acetic Acid (5-HIAA)
Patient’s
diet should be free from chocolates, walnuts, avocados, bananas, nuts, plums,
pineapples, tomatoes, eggplant, vegetables.
When
medically possible, patient should stop drugs such as reserpine, phenacetin,
acetanilide, nicotine, chlorphenylalanine, isoniazid, L-dopa, methyldopa and
MAO inhibitors for 1 to 2 days prior to and during specimen collection.
Patient
should stop smoking 1 to 2 days before specimen collection.
Vanillylmandelic
Acid (VMA)
Patient’s
diet should be free from chocolate, coffee, tea, citrus fruits and food
containing vanilla for 1 day prior to and during specimen collection.
When
medically allowable, drug such as aspirin, drugs containing gentisic and
homogentisic acid, antihypertensive drugs, methyldopa, glyceryl trinitrate,
chlorpromazine, L-dopa, epinephrine, norepinephrine, prochlorperazine,
reserpine, disulfiram, guanethidine, imipramine, MAO inhibitors, radiographic
dyes should be withheld for 1 to 2 day prior to and during specimen collection.
